High Five

PTA is the largest volunteer organization working exclusively to improve the education, health, safety, and well-being of all children and youth. Your local PTA membership decides on its own programs, projects, and legislative activities. Through PTA, parents, teachers, administrators and others work for quality education and a true partnership between home and school.

The National PTA, which began in 1897, brings together the efforts of members, local units and state PTAs on child-centered issues. PTA has played an important role in many areas including child labor laws, hot lunch programs, the Family and Medical Leave Act, and the Children's Television Act to improve TV programs for children to name a few. Everyone who cares about children is encouraged to join PTA.

It is important to remember that in order to have a successful membership year you should:

  • form a committee. Set goals and aim high, develop a plan and set a theme
  • try to be visible at all school functions
  • invite and encourage new parents, staff, administrators, and school board members to join your unit
  • always advertise your success!
